How to study the Core 2000
- Learn kana first. The sentences mix kanji with hiragana and katakana. If you can't read kana yet, start with the Hiragana and Katakana decks; the furigana over each kanji is written in hiragana.
- Read the whole sentence. The target word is in the sentence for a reason: it shows which particles go with it and how it's used.
- Keep the pace steady. The Core 2000 is long. At 10 new words a day it takes a little over six months; at 20 a day, a little over three. Reviews of earlier words come on top.
After the Core 2000
The Japanese Core 6000 deck covers the 6,000 most common words, with cloze cards: you fill in the missing word from the sentence. For grammar, Tae Kim's Japanese Grammar has over 2,000 example sentences.
