Learn 800 beginner Spanish words in 8 weeks with flashcards
Learn 15 new words a day and you'll have seen 800 beginner Spanish words in 8 weeks. Your daily reviews level off at around 60. If that's too many, learn 10 a day. It takes about 12 weeks, and reviews stay closer to 40.
The word list
The Spanish Picture Starter deck has 800 beginner words. The front of each card shows the Spanish word. The back shows the meaning, a picture, an example sentence and audio. The words come from a list of the most used Spanish words. The most common Spanish words explains how those lists work.
The plan
The review counts below assume you rate every card Good. In Decks, a card you keep getting right comes back after 1 day, then 2 days, 5, 12 and 30. Cards you miss come back sooner, so expect more reviews than this. How many new cards per day explains how new words turn into reviews.
| Week | New words a day | Reviews a day (if all Good) | Words seen by the end |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 | 15 to 30 | 105 |
| 2 | 15 | about 45 | 210 |
| 3 | 15 | 45 to 60 | 315 |
| 4 to 7 | 15 | about 60 | 735 |
| 8 | 15, last word on day 5 | about 70 | 800 |
| 9 onward | 0 | falling to about 40 | 800 |
The Spanish Picture Starter deck is free in Decks. To follow this plan on your iPhone, get Decks on the App Store.
Each day
- Do your reviews first.
- Then learn your new words.
- Read the example sentence out loud. Nouns come with el or la, so you pick up the gender too.
If you miss a day, do the reviews and skip the new words until you've caught up.
If reviews pile up
If reviews start taking much longer than before, stop adding new words for a few days. What to do when reviews pile up has more. Decks' free plan limits how many reviews you can do each day. Premium lets you set your own limit.
After 800 words
Beginner Spanish Sentences has over 1,200 short sentences with native audio, so you can practise putting words together. If you want more words, Spanish Frequency 5000 has the 5,000 most common ones, ranked by how often they're used.
