Decks

The 100 Most Common Chinese Words (Mandarin), with Pinyin

These are the 100 most frequently used words in Mandarin Chinese, ranked by corpus frequency. They are the first 100 cards of the Chinese Frequency 5000 deck, which uses simplified characters and has audio for every word in the app.

Many of the top words are single characters that work as grammar: 的 (de), which links a description to a noun; 了 (le), which marks a completed action or a change; 是 (shì), "to be"; and 不 (bù), "not". Others are pronouns like 我 (wǒ, I) and 你 (nǐ, you).

How to study this list

  • Learn the tone with the pinyin. The tone mark changes the word: mǎi is "buy", mài is "sell". Say each word aloud with its tone, and use the audio in the app.
  • Grammar words make more sense in sentences. Words like 的, 了 and 着 are hard to pin to one English meaning. The Chinese Frequency Sentences deck shows them in 5,000 sentences ordered by frequency.
  • Pace yourself. The list is ordered by usefulness, so a steady 10 to 20 new words a day moves you through the most useful vocabulary first.

After the first 100

The full deck continues to 5,214 words. If you're preparing for an HSK exam, the HSK grammar decks drill each level's sentence patterns, and Essential Chinese covers 728 everyday words with pinyin.
